I sat down at the very end of the row.
Jessica stormed over. “Nice move, Josie. Can’t get Ethan, so you go after his brother instead? You think that’ll get you closer to him?”
She was clearly still stewing over what happened
earlier. She couldn’t go after Julian, so she aimed
at me.
I kept my eyes on the stage. “I’m not.”
She laughed coldly. “How old is he? Twenty–four?
You have no shame, do you?”
My hands clenched into fists. She dared to talk
about Julian like that.
I stood up suddenly. She was shorter, so she had to tilt her chin up to meet my eyes. “What? What do you want?”
“Want to make a bet?” I stared at her.
She stepped back. “What kind of bet?”
“For the regional pack cheerleading solo spot,” !
said. “You versus me.”
She blinked, then burst out laughing like I’d just
told the funniest joke in the world. “You? Fine. If I
win, you get on your knees and lick my shoes.”
“Deal,” I said flatly. “If I win, you apologize to me, in
front of the whole class. And to Julian.”
“Fine,” she spat.
The performances flew by.
Soon, Ethan’s voice echoed through the speakers.
“Next up, How Beautiful I Am. Get ready,
everyone!”
The cheer squad members stood up, buzzing with
excitement.
I stayed where I was and pulled off my hoodie.
Gasps rippled through the surrounding students.
“Oh my God, Josie really did lose weight. Her waist
is at least half the size it used to be.”
“And her skin. Oh my God, no pores.”
“Is it just me, or does she look way prettier than
Jessica?”
“Keep your voice down, she’ll hear you.”
Jessica spun around and glared at me. Then she
sneered. “So this is why you’ve been so confident.
Starving yourself, huh?”
Her friends jumped in. “You can’t learn real
technique in just two months. There’s no way she
can beat you in dance.”
Jessica smirked and led her group to the
backstage area.
I followed silently.
Once inside, I saw Ethan checking his script with
another host.
His gaze swept over our group and then stopped
on me.
He went completely still.
“I…” he said slowly. “Have I seen you somewhere before?”
