Comments Said Not to Save My Toxic Childhood Sweetheart, I Chose Cambridge Chapter 04
The second we stepped off the bus, the Testing Center PA Announcement System blared overhead Most test-takers rushed through the center gates, only a handful stragglers sprinting last minute.
Mr. Halewell took two steps then paused, glancing back at me.
“Hurry to get your new ticket printed. I’ll go check on the others.”
I nodded without a word.
When I finished filling out paperwork for a replacement ticket and stepped back outside the center centrance, loud shouting echoed across the parking lot.
“How could you forget where you hid them? My mom will lose their minds if I miss this SAT exam!”
“You stashed all the tickets, how can you not remember where?”
“There’s a whole stack of them-where’d you hide everything? Search again!”
Seraphina stood trapped in the middle of an angry crowd, sobbing uncontrollably.
“It’s all Elowen’s fault! She kept badgering me nonstop, I panicked and forgot where I put them.”
No one bought her weak excuses this time.
Kael’s face turned ashen as he tore through every pocket of Seraphina’s hooded sweatshirt over and over again.
Mr. Halewell stood beside the center entrance, cell phone pressed tight to his ear, his brows crumpled into a tight knot.
“Yes, this is the Top Honors Cohort class… there’s a major issue with our SAT Admission Tickets…”
He hung up, dialed another number, then cut the call halfway through.
He lifted his head, eyes glistening with helplessness.
“I’m still trying to find a solution.”
A pair of campus security officers lingered by the gate, watching the chaotic crowd warily but holding back until county deputies arrived.
His voice carried no confidence at all.
Dozens of student parents swarmed around Seraphina, their voices sharp and furious.
“Find those tickets right now! If my kid misses this exam, I won’t let this slide!”
“Truth or Dare? How irresponsible can you be? You’re wasting everyone’s future on childish games!”
Seraphina’s eyes stayed red, her head hanging low.
One of student parents shouted out in panic.
“Can we rush my kid to print a replacement ticket?”
“It’s testing start time already-fresh slips won’t get you past the hall doors once testing’s started!”
“What do we do now? Just let all of their hard work go to waste?”
“My kid took a whole gap year just to grind this SAT all over again!”
Chaos exploded around us. Some parents broke down crying, others dialed school administration, one furious parent had already dialed the county non-emergency line ten minutes prior over the blocked testing entrance, a few marched over to the campus security officer begging for leniency.
No one offered them a single break.
The security officer turned his gaze away, and the SAT Proctors stared down at their wristwatches.
Every single person’s eyes locked onto the testing hall doors as they slowly slid shut.
A sharp click echoed as the locks engaged fully.
When Seraphina spotted me standing off to the side, her face lit up with desperate hope.
“Elowen has a MIT Undergraduate Research Fellowship slot! Beg the school board to schedule a makeup testing block for all of us!”
The second the words left her mouth, every pair of eyes in the crowd locked onto me.
Jasper caught on instantly, yelling over the noise.
“Exactly! Make her talk to the school administration for make-up testing!”
“The academy can’t let our entire Top Honors Cohort class miss the SAT!” another one chimed in.
“Elowen, you have influence over the board-please help us out.”
The wave of shouts crashed over me once more.
This time, they weren’t hurling insults. They were begging.
[Seraphina’s so clever-she shifted all the blame straight onto Elowen in seconds.)
[How can people still defend her? This plot’s morally awful.)
[Is Elowen this calm because she’s got some secret backup plan?]
I ignored the scrolling comments, watching the chaotic scene unfold with cold amusement.
It was ridiculous.
Twenty minutes earlier, they’d ripped my SAT slip straight in half for laughs. Now they begged me to use my exclusive opportunities to save their futures.
Kael walked toward me, his lips parting like he planned to speak, but he fell silent before a single word came out.
He didn’t beg for help, but he made no move to stop the crowd from pressuring me.
“A MIT Undergraduate Research Fellowship slot?”
The whole crowd fell quiet, waiting for me to continue.
“I’m afraid that’s impossible. One hour ago, I declined the MIT research position and accepted my Haverthorp Institute offer instead.”
