He Thought I Was Being Good, I Was Just Getting Ready to leave Chapter 13

I turned around and met Harrison’s dark stare.

I scanned the street, making sure I wasn’t dreaming.

“What are you doing here?” Annoyance surged through me.

He lifted his chin. “Your stuff is taking up space at my place. Come back and get it.”

After I couldn’t get past the door code that day, I never went back. And yeah, I still had things there.

I didn’t turn around. “Throw it away. I don’t want it.”

“You can’t just decide you don’t want it anymore.” He grabbed my arm. His jaw was tight.

He was talking about the stuff. Or maybe something else.

I met his eyes. “I’m bored with it. Tired of it. Don’t like it anymore. So I’m throwing it all away. That’s my right.”

I’d imagined how he’d react when he found out I’d quit my job and left Silver Creek. Maybe a dismissive “Good riddance.”

He was born with his nose in the air. Proud to his bones.

During all those years of playing around, he saw it as just exercising his rights.

And under his power, everyone was supposed to fall in line and obey.

But here he was now, looking at me with those eyes, unwilling, unaccepting.

I rarely saw Harrison lose his composure like this.

“Do you want me to come back to Silver Creek with you?” I asked him directly.

He pressed his lips together and said nothing.

See? This was who he was—even if he regretted everything, even if he wanted to beg.

He wouldn’t. He’d stay on his high horse, wouldn’t even say the words “come back with me.”

I shook my head. “Even if I go back, it won’t be for you. I’m not going to bet my marriage on you getting better someday.”

“Divorce is a lot more complicated than breaking up.”

He said, “What if I can be better?”

I raised an eyebrow. “That was answer enough.”
