Less than twenty minutes later, four trucks pulled up in front of the villa.
Dozens of workers jumped out, carrying sledgehammers and crowbars.
The foreman jogged over to me. When he saw the blood covering my face, he froze for a moment.
“Ms. Hartwell… is this the place?”
I pointed at the front door. My voice was flat and cold. “Break it down.”
“Everything inside—the luxury furniture, the appliances, every piece of designer menswear in the closet.”
“If I paid for it, smash it and haul it away. Leave nothing behind.”
“Got it!”
A deafening crash cut through the rain as the front door gave way under a sledgehammer.
Almost immediately, Sierra’s scream rang out from inside.
I walked back into the house one step at a time.
Icy rainwater streamed from my clothes, pooling on the floor with every step.
The workers had already started.
The imported leather sofa worth hundreds of thousands of dollars was slashed to pieces.
The crystal chandelier crashed to the ground, scattering glass across the room.
Bennett held Sierra tightly in his arms. His eyes were bloodshot with rage.
“Adelaide! Have you completely lost your mind?!”
He pointed at the workers. “You brought people into my house and started destroying everything!
“You house?” I looked at him coldly. “The down payment for this villa came from me.”
“Every piece of furniture here—I chose it. I paid for it.”
“If I decide the things I bought are filthy and want to hear them shatter, that’s my business.”
“What exactly are you planning to report to the police?”
Several workers had already stormed into the walk-in closet.
Bennett’s designer suits and limited-edition sneakers were tossed into the muddy rainwater outside and trampled underfoot.
As he watched the image he’d worked so hard to maintain being destroyed piece by piece, his entire body shook with fury.
He charged toward me.
“Adelaide, you’re only acting like this because you have money!” His voice rose with every word.
“When our startup was at its lowest, I stayed with you in that leaky basement. I ate moldy bread with you!”
“And now you’re willing to go this far over stuff like this?”
Again. His get-out-of-jail-free card—the one he’d used so many times he’d practically canonized himself with it.
“You still have the nerve to bring up the basement?”
Bennett’s face went white. He stumbled back a step, his lips moving but no words coming out.
I didn’t bother with him anymore. Instead, I walked straight toward Sierra.
She was sitting on the floor, trembling with fear.
The moment I approached, she instinctively shrank backward.
Both hands flew to the pearl heirloom necklace around her neck.
“Adelaide…” Tears streamed down her face.
“Please don’t hit me. I’ll take off the wedding dress. I’ll take it off right now…”
“Too late.” I bent down and looked at her with icy eyes. “Anything you’ve touched disgusts me.”
My gaze settled on the necklace. “Give it back.”
Sierra sobbed harder and looked desperately toward Bennett for help. He tried to push forward.
Two workers carrying crowbars stepped into his path without a word. He couldn’t get past them.
I let out a cold laugh. “No?”
Before Sierra could react, I grabbed the necklace and yanked hard.
The delicate string broke instantly.
Pearls scattered everywhere—rolling, scattering, one after another—just like seven years of devotion I’d wasted on that man. Shattered. Worthless. Gone.
The pearl heirloom necklace was the last thing Grandma Evelyn had left me. And now it was ruined.
It felt like my heart had been ripped apart.
The pain was so intense that even breathing became difficult. But I refused to shed a single tear.
“Adelaide! You’ve gone too damn far!”
At last, Bennett couldn’t contain himself any longer.
He looked around at the devastation and roared in fury.
I turned away from him. Step by step, I walked back into the pouring rain.
“Smash it all.” My voice cut through the storm.
“Make sure Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Vance enjoy the show.”
Behind me, Sierra finally broke down completely. Her sobs echoed through the ruined villa.
“Adelaide! Adelaide, you stop right there!”
