He Made Me Fight His Champion Best Friend, Then Begged Me to Come Home Chapter 02
Nathaniel hurriedly grabbed a box of tissues.
“Sierra’s been training a lot lately. I’m used to making it for her, I’ll go back and make you something else.”
I leaned back, trying to put some distance between us as a wave of nausea washed over me.
“I’m not eating it, not anymore. Never again.”
“Emily, are you seriously having a meltdown right now? Over this?” He slammed the bowl down in frustration, irritation burning in his eyes. “And that one million dollars, I didn’t take it.”
I whipped my head toward him, gripping the bedsheet tightly. “Why not? That was money I earned.”
“It was just a joke. Besides, you injured Sierra.” His brows furrowed. “Emily… why do you suddenly need so much money?”
“I need it because—” I was about to answer when the door opened.
Sierra walked in, casually lifting her hand to show a wristwatch with visible scratches.
My breath caught.
It was the watch I had given Nathaniel for his birthday.
I had worked eight different jobs, pulling overnight shifts for an entire month just to afford it.
It was supposed to be his most treasured possession.
He had once sworn he would wear it forever, said he’d take it to his grave.
Now it was on Sierra’s wrist.
“Sierra got injured and wanted compensation,” Nathaniel said awkwardly, rubbing his hand. “She just happened to pick that watch.”
“Give it back,” I said immediately, my voice shaking. “I’d rather throw it away than let her wear it.”
“Then take it,” Sierra scoffed. “It’s just a cheap piece of junk anyway.”
She pulled it off and tossed it toward me.
I reached out instinctively, but it slipped through my fingers and hit the floor hard.
Pain shot through my wrist as I fell forward.
The watch face shattered into pieces right in front of me.
“Sierra, be more careful! You broke the watch,” Nathaniel said, frowning, yet he immediately stepped forward to shield her from me.
“Sorry,” Sierra said lightly, resting her chin on his shoulder. “My grip’s a little strong. Didn’t mean it.”
Her eyes locked onto mine, full of quiet provocation.
“But now there’s no compensation. Nathan, didn’t you already get your engagement gift back? Why not give it to me? I won’t sell it like Emily did.”
“No,” I said sharply before Nathaniel could respond.
That was the diamond he had given me when he confessed at eighteen.
A heart-shaped pink diamond worth ten million dollars, custom-cut by him for me.
Sierra tilted her head. “But you already sold it, didn’t you? You started it.”
I opened my mouth to argue, but a notification flickering on my phone made me freeze.
“If you really have to… then pay me three million to buy it back,” I said through clenched teeth.
Nathaniel stood up so fast his chair scraped against the floor.
“Emily! Are you really that desperate for money? So desperate you’d sell our
engagement gift twice?”
His hands were shaking with anger.
“No! That’s not it! My grandmother is hospitalized and I need money for her treatment!”
“I never sold it!”
Sierra tilted her head again, interrupting calmly. “Isn’t your grandma just relaxing in your estate garden right now?”
She turned her phone toward Nathaniel.
On the screen, my grandma was sitting peacefully in the sun.
Nathaniel stared for a moment, then disappointment slowly filled his eyes.
“Emily, you’re willing to use even your family for money? What’s next, me?”
“Fine. I’ll give you the money. Don’t ever come back to me again.”
He threw the card at my face and turned away.
It cut across my cheek, leaving a thin line of blood.
I stared at the familiar card in silence, frozen in place.
