“You said Sierra was injured too. So she’s convenient, but I’m not?”
I swallowed the lump in my throat, barely holding back tears.
“Then why are you using my money? Nathaniel, I told you already, that money is for my grandmother’s treatment.”
“Stop trying to lie to me,” he said coldly. “Sierra is just helping you try on the dress.”
His eyes sharpened, warning and impatient.
“If you care so much about that money, then fine. Help Sierra with the dress fitting. That service will ‘earn back’ one million.”
A bitter laugh slipped out of me. “Fine. But transfer the money first.”
His gaze toward me turned completely unfamiliar, like I was a stranger.
The moment I heard the transfer confirmation sound, I crouched down and started adjusting Sierra’s wedding gown.
As I crouched, Sierra suddenly lifted her foot and kicked me hard in the abdomen.
Nathaniel instinctively moved forward, but stopped halfway.
Pain exploded through my stomach so violently I couldn’t breathe.
“Oh? Sorry, Emily. Didn’t mean to kick you.”
She patted my shoulder with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
A sharp, stinging pain spread through my shoulder immediately after.
I collapsed to the ground. Nathaniel frowned.
“Emily, stop acting, with Sierra’s boxing level, you’d be unconscious if she really hit you.”
The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth. I couldn’t even process his words clearly anymore.
Instinctively, I grabbed his hand and froze. No engagement ring.
I let go immediately and tried to push myself away.
Nathaniel grabbed my arm and forced me to stay still.
A heavy scent hit me. It was Sierra’s perfume. The same scent she always wore.
My body ached, but my heart hurt even more.
Nathaniel used to hate perfume.
I once tried to get matching couple scents for us. He always agreed verbally, but never wore it.
If he did, he would immediately shower before stepping out.
And now… He was willingly soaked in her scent.
I pushed him away and staggered toward the exit.
Then my phone rang. A hospital call.
“Ms. Harrison, your grandmother’s respiratory function is rapidly declining!”
“You must pay the remaining eight hundred thousand dollars within three hours for emergency surgery.”
My entire body turned cold.
I spun around, and saw Nathaniel already getting into the car with Sierra.
“Please, Nathaniel, Grandma is dying. I need you to lend me another four hundred thousand.”
I slammed my hands against the car door despite the pain.
He reached for the window, but paused when he heard me.
Sierra leaned closer to him inside the car and smiled through the window.
“Don’t worry, Emily, I’ll talk to him for you.”
Then she turned to me.
“We’re heading out to celebrate someone’s birthday. There’s no space in the car.”
“Why don’t you head to Lakeview Pavilion first? I’ll bring Nathan over to talk to you later.”
And just like that, the car sped off.
All I could smell was exhaust fumes as the car disappeared into the distance.
I stood there under the scorching sun, staring at the remaining balance in my account, then started walking step by step. Every movement tore at my wounds.
By the time I reached the estate gates, my shoes were soaked with blood.
When I finally stepped inside, freezing water suddenly poured down from above. Ice-cold.
It soaked through my entire body instantly.
My lips turned pale.
Every bone felt like it was cracking from the cold. And the pain in my abdomen multiplied a hundredfold.
“Nathaniel… what is this?” I whispered.
“A welcome ceremony,” Sierra’s voice rang out. “For our guest.”
Nathaniel took off his jacket and stepped toward me, trying to drape it over my shoulders.
I grabbed his hand.
“Nathaniel… there’s no time. Please. I need you to lend me four hundred thousand.”
At my repeated plea, his face darkened.
He pulled his hand away and turned around.
Sierra came downstairs wearing my engagement dress. She slipped her arm through Nathaniel’s.
