I Borrowed Money From My Bullies Before Faking My Death Chapter 07
“You said I looked frumpy,” I argued, trying to pull free. “So why drag me along?”
“Thanks for the reminder.”
Knox snatched the glasses off my face. Then, from God knows where, produced a cute little clip and pinned my bangs back.
He scanned my face and gave his verdict. “Much better.”
I moved to yank it out immediately.
“Touch it, and I’ll throw you onto the track,” he threatened.
I gritted my teeth, knowing damn well he meant it. “Fine.”
I felt exposed. No sense of safety at all.
All I could do was follow behind him, eyes down.
The racetrack on the outskirts of town was very familiar. One of the places I’d been tailing Knox before.
Everywhere we went, people knew him. Which meant stares. Lots of them. Landed right on me.
Some guy grinned at Knox. “Finally got a girl. Didn’t know you were into the innocent type.”
Knox brushed it off. “She’s alright. Just a little toy.”
He went to get changed. Told me to stay put in the top-floor observation deck. They even set out desserts for me.
I ate my dessert and told myself—just think of it as a free show.
Then, mid-bite, I heard a familiar female voice.
“Silas really does treat me well. Even gave me that magazine feature last week.”
Someone else chimed in. “Everyone said he swaps girls out fast, but you’ve seriously got him hooked.”
The girl laughed. “His type is so weird, though. One thing he requires is that I can’t hold eye contact. So I just act all timid around him. Works like a charm.”
“Yeah, I’ve heard that before. Silas likes them shy. Probably most men do.”
The girl paused, then lowered her voice a little. “Right? Men love the innocent act. He also likes me in casual clothes. I hate it. Nothing beats a good dress.”
Someone else comforted her. “He’s the sugar daddy. What can you do?”
“True.” The girl again. “Good-looking sugar daddies who spend big are rare. He’s supposed to stop by later, too.”
Wait.
Silas was coming here?
That was why Knox dragged me along. He still hadn’t given up on shoving me at Silas.
I needed to leave. Now. But they were blocking the doorway.
Then they sat down nearby.
I shrank as small as possible.
Didn’t matter. I still got recognized.
A shocked female voice. “You—you’re that thief from yesterday, aren’t you? Why are you everywhere?”
I was speechless.
“Delilah, you know her?” someone asked.
Delilah Vance walked up to me, eyes boring into me. “How did you get in here?”
“Knox brought me.”
She let out a cold laugh. “You expect anyone to believe that? You came here to hunt for a rich guy, didn’t you? Don’t think fixing your bangs changes anything She stopped.
Then continued. “You’re barely passable.”
The others rushed to comfort her. “Who’d even want her? She’s just embarrassing herself.”
Delilah’s eyes locked onto me.
Something flickered in her expression. Then she took in my inability to form a response and snapped, “Get out. Now. Unless you want me to have security drag you out.”
My eyes lit up.
I could leave?
I stood immediately. “I’m going.”
As I moved past her, Delilah grabbed me.
She yanked the clip from my bangs.
Then she took a pair of glasses off her friend’s collar and shoved them onto my face.
“There. Now go.” She pointed at the door, face blank.
I blinked. “Oh… thanks.”
So much better. I had my armor back.
