He Made Me Fight His Champion Best Friend, Then Begged Me to Come Home Chapter 08

He didn’t know that Emily had sold her most precious keepsake for her grandmother’s benefit.

A blinding flash of light cut through his memories.

A speeding truck slammed into Nathaniel.

Blood blurred his vision as he looked at the urn.

His strength drained away as he bled, but he still held the urn tightly.

A faint, blurry image of Emily appeared before him.

Then Nathaniel collapsed and lost consciousness.

After waking up from that coma, I completely forgot the past.

When I opened my eyes, I thought I had finally been reunited with my grandmother.

Instead, I found myself lying in a huge bed of flowers.

I sat up and realized I was inside a large flower shop.

A young, handsome shop owner was watering the plants.

“You’re awake. Get up, it’s time to eat.”

His casual tone confused me; I had never seen him before.

As if reading my thoughts, the shop owner turned and smiled.

“Hey there. Your grandmother asked me to save you. My name is Lucas Green.”

Over the following conversations, I learned why I was still alive.

Before Grandma died, Sierra had gone to see her in person.

An hour before her death, Sierra even sent a video to Grandma’s primary doctor.

She wanted my grandmother to watch me die a pathetic death.

But Sierra didn’t know one thing. Grandma had watched me grow up.

She could tell something was wrong from the exhausted state I was in every time I visited her.

Lucas, the grandson of Grandma’s best friend, had been asked by her to keep an eye on me at all times.

That day, he happened to be in the villa next door.

He found me unconscious after the miscarriage, worried something terrible would happen to me.

So he quickly took me away while Sierra and her friends were passed out drunk.

While getting me out, he saw a message on Sierra’s phone.

[Three a.m. Sharp. Make it happen.]

He knew something was off. He realized Sierra was planning another hit-and-run.

When he took me away, he also arranged for someone to tamper with the surveillance footage.

He even prepared a fake tattoo.

By the time I heard all of this, I was already working at the flower shop.

I laughed in surprise. “So you can even replicate tattoos perfectly? That’s amazing.”

Lucas just smiled and said nothing. He gently trimmed the branches alongside me.

I stared at his warm, sunshine-filled face and drifted into thought.

Over the past few months, I had noticed things about him.

But I was too hurt. I didn’t want to fall again.

Grandma’s final wish was for me to be happy.

When I fell in love with Nathaniel, the gap between us was enormous.

I was just an orphan raised by my grandmother on money she made from collecting trash.

And he was the only son of a billionaire family worth a hundred billion.

But Grandma never said a word to stop me.

Because she saw the light in my eyes when I looked at Nathaniel.

She knew. I loved him. I was happy.

But later, Nathaniel changed. The old Nathaniel would have worked side by side with someone as stubborn as me.

He would wear a mascot costume for twelve hours straight without a break, sweating and exhausted but never complaining once.

He was the man who trusted me unconditionally when we were in love.

But eight years later, he looked down on me for being poor.

He hated that I would do anything for money.

But that was how I had been raised.

And when Grandma noticed something wrong with me, she saved every dollar I gave her.

She had Lucas buy me this flower shop.

So I could stand on my own feet.

She knew I had been terrified of insecurity since I was a child.

I used to think I could feel secure with a partner. But losing Grandma was a brutal wake-up call.

It taught me just how devastating the price of relying on someone else could be.
