He Sent An Intern To Meet His Parents, I Sent Him A Wedding Invitation Chapter 03

When I got home, Brandon had already sent me a dozen messages.

The first few were more explanations, but the last one was something different, a travel itinerary.

Miami. To see the ocean.

[Megan, don’t worry. Since you’re temporarily stepping down as Director, I’m taking time off too. I’ll take you to the ocean, the one you’ve always wanted to see. Call it our honeymoon.]

I could imagine how excited I would have been if I’d seen that before.

But this time, I replied with two words: [No need.]

He answered quickly. [Don’t be mad. I already booked tickets for tomorrow at eight. I’ll work all night tonight to clear my schedule. Don’t wait up for me for dinner.]

He added a heart emoji.

I frowned and put down my phone.

Fine. I’d wait until he got home and talk to him then. I’d already agreed to a date through an app. I didn’t want to be his girlfriend anymore.

But I waited all night.

He came back at dawn, slightly drunk. And eight o’clock had long passed.

“Didn’t you say we had tickets for eight? Weren’t we going to Miami?” I blurted out.

He squinted, remembered something, and laughed. “Oh, I canceled those tickets. I’m taking Jenny instead.”

I blinked in disbelief.

“You’ve seen the ocean before. You’ve seen it plenty of times.” He collapsed onto the couch, clearly having been up all night.

“Last night after I finished work, I was going to come home and pack with you. But there was a celebration for Jenny’s promotion.”

“The team took her out for a happy hour. I had a few too many. She said she’d never seen the ocean, so I changed the plans.”

Even though I wasn’t expecting anything anymore, I still heard myself say, “You promised.”

The alcohol made him pause for a second. Then he smiled, that careless smile of his.

“Megan, we’ve been together how long now? Almost ten years. We’re basically an old married couple. Why are you making such a big deal out of this?”

“Besides, you’ve been to the beach three times. Don’t be greedy.”

He leaned back on the couch and closed his eyes.

I looked at him, my chest tightening.

I had booked three trips to see the ocean. But I had never actually gone.

The first time, right before I left, Brandon suddenly spiked a high fever. I stood up my best friend Chloe and stayed by his side for three days.

The second time, he had a major bid coming up. I canceled my ticket again and stayed up all night revising the proposal over and over.

The third time, a scheduling conflict came up and there was no one to meet an important client. I called the airline, canceled my trip as usual, put on my heels, and went to see the client.

Three times I booked, and three times I never actually left.

But he only remembered that I had booked three trips.

I nudged his arm. “Then I’ll go with someone else.”

He answered with his eyes still closed, “Yeah, go with Chloe.”

“Not with Chloe,” I said.

He closed his eyes. I could hear his breathing even out.

I didn’t bother him. I set a departure date with my match for the day after tomorrow.
