He Wished I’d Break Up With Him, So I Did—on My Way to the Airport chapter 06

Tears streamed down Mia’s face.

“Ethan, you’re awful.”

He didn’t defend himself. He just pried her fingers loose and walked away without looking back.

Ethan rushed out of the hospital and flagged down a cab. “The train station, please.” The driver gave him a look but said nothing, stepping on the gas.

Leaning back against the seat, he typed a message even though he knew it would never get through.

That comment was just thoughtless nonsense. I didn’t mean a word of it. Chloe, please let me explain…

His phone rang suddenly. He answered it full of hope, only to hear his mother’s voice.

“Ethan, is Chloe with you? I can’t get through to her. I was planning a birthday gathering next week and wanted you both to come home.”

He opened his mouth, yet no words came out.

“Hello? I’m talking to you!”

“Mom, Chloe… she…”

“What about her?”

“She… she wants to break up with me.”

Silence hung on the line for several seconds.

“What did you do?” He had no answer.

“Ethan, mark my words. If you’ve hurt her, don’t ever set foot in this house again.”

The call ended. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the phone tightly.

Once at the station, he hurried to the ticket counter and bought a ticket for the earliest train heading to my city. He sank onto a waiting bench, resting his head in his hands, his mind in complete chaos.

He arrived in my city at one in the morning. Hailing another cab, he gave the driver my home address. Twenty minutes later, he stood outside my apartment building. Looking up, he saw no light in my room.

He climbed the stairs and knocked on the door. There was no reply. Still stubborn, he knocked again and again. The door next door creaked open, and an elderly woman peeked out.

“Who are you looking for?”

“Excuse me, is the young woman who lives here home?”

“You mean Chloe? She moved out ages ago.”

Ethan froze.

“Moved out? Where did she go?”

“I have no idea. I heard she went abroad.”

“Abroad? Which country?”

“I couldn’t say. It’s not my place to ask.”

The woman shut her door. Ethan stood staring at the closed entrance. He pulled out his phone and dialed my number once more. It was still powered off.

He leaned against the wall and slowly slid down to the floor. The motion-sensor lights in the corridor faded out, leaving everything in darkness. He did not move. He stayed there, sitting through the entire night.

When dawn broke, he struggled to his feet, his legs numb from sitting too long. Holding onto the wall for support, he walked downstairs and headed for my workplace. The receptionist recognized him; he had visited several times before.

“Good morning, I’m here to see Chloe Bennett.”

The receptionist looked at him with a complicated expression.

“Ms. Bennett has resigned.”

“Resigned? When?”

“Last week.”

“Do you know where she went?”

“I’m not at liberty to share that information.”

“I’m her boyfriend.”

The receptionist’s tone turned cool.

“She left specific instructions. If anyone came asking, especially you, sir, we were not to disclose her whereabouts.”

His heart sank like a stone. “She really said that?”

“Yes. She said the two of you were finished.”

He stood rooted to the spot, clenching and unclenching his fists.

“Please, just tell me where she is. I have something urgent to say to her.”

The receptionist hesitated for a moment then sighed.

“She’s transferred to our overseas branch in Paris.”
