The Fitness Coach Mother Broke Her Daughter With A Watch Chapter 05
“What death? What are you talking about?”
A full minute passed before Mom finally managed to speak again.
The two officers exchanged a look.
One of them asked in return, “Chloe Parker is dead. You didn’t know?”
He walked to the window of the PE office and looked out toward the field.
There was surprise in his voice when he repeated himself.
“You work at the same school she attends. All you have to do is lean out a little, and you can see her body on the track field. You didn’t know?”
Of course she did not know.
At the very beginning, she had glanced at me a couple of times and decided I was throwing a tantrum.
After that, she never looked at me again.
After all, leaning out of the window to check would have been too obvious.
She did not want me to think she was still worried about me.
If she did that, she would be the first one to back down, which meant she had lost.
Mom’s brows drew together in irritation.
“Are you real police officers? Did she get you to come here and act this out?”
One officer pulled out his badge and showed it to her again.
His expression turned serious.
“Ms. Morgan, we need you to cooperate with our investigation.”
Only then did Mom’s expression ease slightly.
“Did Chloe call the police and ask you to come?”
“I’m sorry. She’s just a child, and she’s throwing a tantrum at me. She probably thought that if you came, this would all get resolved and she could give herself an excuse to back down.”
“I’m sorry you had to come all this way. I’ll go drag her up right now.”
She started toward the office door.
The two officers stopped her.
“The scene is being processed. Until that is finished, please do not go near it.”
Mom leaned toward the window and looked outside.
She saw several people in white coats gathered around my body, taking photographs.
Police tape had been set up around me.
The scene did not look fake.
At last, panic began to creep into her face.
“No… Officers, this is just a child’s prank. You don’t have to indulge her like this…”
“Ms. Morgan, we are being serious.”
Mom patted around herself in a fluster.
Only then did she remember that she had given her phone to Mia.
She rushed to Mia, snatched the phone out of her hand, and opened the app connected to our fitness trackers with trembling fingers.
Because the signal was poor, the loading icon kept spinning as the page opened.
Mom was so anxious that she kept tapping the screen, closing the data screen and opening it again.
The instant the interface appeared, her eyes flew across the screen.
When they landed on the synced data from my tracker, her breathing nearly stopped.
Then she let out a long breath, and her whole body relaxed.
She raised the phone and showed the screen to the officers.
She was agitated and even a little angry.
“These are custom fitness trackers I had made for them. They’re connected to their activity data.”
“The history is all here. This morning, when she fell, her active calories were at 1,000. Now they’ve gone up to 1,300.”
“The tracker has been on her wrist the whole time. So tell me, if she’s already dead, why is the number still going up?”
The officers examined the screen closely and looked puzzled too.
“We don’t know what is going on with the data, but the medical examiner has already confirmed that the child is dead.”
The other officer spoke.
“Maybe the data just isn’t accurate. This other set of numbers belongs to your younger daughter, right?”
“Has she done any exercise in the last few hours? Did her numbers go up?”
Mom denied it without hesitation.
“Impossible. I spent a fortune having these custom-made by a specialized manufacturer.”
“And I calculated their daily exercise requirements very carefully. There is no way…”
Before she could finish, she seemed to see something terrifying.
Her words stopped abruptly.
