My Husband Made Me Give Blood to Her – While I Was Carrying His Baby Chapter 04
[Summer’s POV]
A week earlier, I had been offered the transfer because of my performance at work. I had turned it down because of the pregnancy and because I had not wanted to leave Evan.
None of that mattered anymore.
“Summer, aren’t you pregnant? Take care of yourself. There will be other opportunities, and I’ll give you priority next time.”
I drew a breath. “Ms. Thompson, I lost the baby. I want to come back.”
She fell silent for a moment. “I’ll put your name back on the list. A miscarriage is serious, so take a week off and report to headquarters afterward.”
“Thank you,” I said, my voice breaking.
Throughout that week, Evan never contacted me. Perhaps he had forgotten that his wife was pregnant at all.
I was not surprised. I had spent years making excuses for him, but I would never do so again.
After a week, I was discharged. I scrolled through Ann’s Instagram feed and found Evan in every post. Surrounded by gifts and gourmet meals, she was being treated like a princess.
I had received nothing.
The pearl necklace Evan had once promised to buy for me now hung around Ann’s neck. I scrolled past the photo without feeling a thing.
When I returned home, everything looked exactly as I had left it. Evan had never come back, and he did not even know that I had been hospitalized.
I packed my belongings, threw away our framed photograph, burned his love letters, and left my wedding ring on the coffee table.
The apartment was empty again, just as it had been on the day we moved in.
I reviewed the Petition for Dissolution of Marriage and the Marital Settlement Agreement, which detailed the division of our property, debts, and support obligations, and signed my name.
Before I could call Evan and ask him to sign, he returned.
I was speaking to a colleague on the phone when she asked about my flight.
“Tomorrow afternoon,” I replied.
Evan entered, and I ended the call.
“What’s happening tomorrow afternoon? Do you have a prenatal appointment?” he asked.
“It’s for work, not a checkup.”
He held out a takeout container. “I’m sorry, Summer. I couldn’t leave Ann. I brought you some salmon soup. It’s supposed to be good for you.”
I did not accept it. The smell of fish turned my stomach. He had been married to me for years, yet he still did not know that I could not eat fish.
I no longer had the energy to argue with him.
“Also, Ann’s clothes are silk, so they can’t go in the washing machine. Hand-wash them tonight.”
I stared at him, wondering whether he had always been this person or had simply become him over time.
“Leave them there,” I said through clenched teeth.
“I just need to grab some clothes before I head back.”
He packed quickly. I approached him with the papers.
“Evan, the mortgage has been paid off. I only need your signature.”
He suspected nothing and signed without reading them.
I watched him leave with his bag, then booked a flight departing two hours later.
I removed my ring and left it beside the divorce papers and the abortion record on the coffee table as my final goodbye.
Our marriage was over.
